LT.Div5. Chapter 30

Having Balanced Center Firm

"It's difficult to understand techniques."
"Because you don't distinguish what is important from what is trivial."

In order to keep the best balance in every pose and every motion of Taekwondo so that you can continue each motion to another fluently you should keep your center settled. What is the settled center? We can with ease think of the stable one. This, however, is not good enough and the settled center of Taekwondo ought to get the level that it can apply itself to every change balancing swift motions. Nature, which the right Taekwondo resembles in its essence, has such balanced firm center that she generates and contains infinite changes with no confusion in her order. This settled center of nature always lives in the empty and constant. Following these instructions Taekwondo man's training cannot be established to move properly until it obtains this firm center. For no one can walk until he can stand in his growing process.

The no-swaying center is naturally low, which accords to the principle that everything drops to the low spot by its nature. Thus the low center can be firm relying on the stability of the whole. A tree, only with its deep roots, can stand the severe change like the hurricane or a drought. On the other hand, the fast moving center is naturally high, which rides the flow of nature in the air so that it avoids prevention. A thing can fall fast because it starts from a high spot, and thus, the top of a tree moves faster than its lower part and the edge of a wheel turns faster than its core.

<Do> of everything consists in its changefulness yet not in its fixedness. Since, however, a man's learning traces the unchanged to the changeable and man's thinking expands from distinctions over into that beyond the distinction, the training of Taekwondo should learn the firm center fixed at first and then obtains the center in the swift motion. You can understand they are beyond distinctions only after you understand those distinctions. This explains why you are taught to have your waist and legs strong when you begin learning at first.

Your waist is to a tree's trunk what your legs are to its roots. Thus how can it be that a plant with shallow root and poor trunk can stand firmly growing its branches and leaves in full flourish even under cold wind or hot sunshine? Therefore, the firm and stable center comes from the power of a your waist and legs while the temperate motion of Taekwondo depends on such a center. The low center is stable not swaying while the high center is so changeful as to adapt yourself to everything. Make the both in one. You can attain proficiency in the low center through hard training, which brings you both of the low and the high center in one. At the end of all this course you shall understand how to have the both in one again; how to include the center of change in the firm stable one and how to have your center low and high at once. Only then you can have your center empty imitating the virtue of nature.

The center is like the axle that manages the balance. As balance is made when Tang(Earth) and Saram(Man) are united, Earth(Tang) expands itself as harmonized with the world while Man(Saram) expands as keeping itself, which is to be pursued when the center manages the balance. On the other hand, as the center is what the opponent keeps his continuous offenses headed at, his right offense proceeds toward it because every activity of defending yourself defends on the center of motion and thus of the vitality. The center which manages motions is even connected to the vital points on the whole body along KyongRaks, which show how closely motion and life are interrelated.
You as a Taekwondo man should learn and train the stable center at first because you should be able to manage your balance arranged in order relying on it so that you can defend yourself and get harmonized in the opposition between your opponent and the world whenever you wants. This stable center is already not stable yet rather adapting yourself to changes, so in this manner the center of change also includes stable and firm one. It is the empty center.

When you can adapt yourself to every change with your center settled there can be no difficulty in realizing every will of yours. Thus the importance in doing Taekwondo lies not in moving hands and feet quickly but in moving the trunk quickly. The good kicks and punches come from the good pose and motion of the waste and of the trunk. It is impossible to move the trunk without movement of the center. The movements of hands and feet accompany and fill up that of the trunk.

No offense can succeed in getting control over the opponent without the accompanying movement of trunk even if the hands and feet were trained hard, and no defense can block or avoid the opponent's power without the trunk standing aside hard and strong as his arms and legs may be. Therefore, you should control your opponent in the mood that hands and feet follows the movements of trunk, and consequently, there will remain no distinction between the trunk and the hand or foot. Only when you move center of the trunk properly your hand and foot will move naturally with proper speed between yourself and him in accordance with it. The motions are speedy and powerful.
